Résumé
This article applies computational method to narrative fiction in the past to investigate the cultural evolution of Individualism and collectivism (later abbreviated as IND-COL). IND-COL concerns the basic form of human corporation, by investigating IND-COL through an evolutionary perspective, we gain a glimpse into the basis of cultural difference. In terms of method, this article uses occurrence of words in fictions as proxy for IND-COL. Cultural artefacts such as narrative fiction are the remnants of people's past psychologies and they are thereby reflexive of the past culture. Narrative fictions from different time period will reveal the evolution of IND-COL through history. Specifically, we predict that social ecology, religion and economic growth will influence the cultural evolution of IND-COL. In practice, we operationalize IND-COL as words occurrence according to previous literature on IND-COL measurement. We then operationalize social ecology with information from GIS (geographical information system), religion as dummy variable for Protestantism, and economic growth with GDP and urbanization rate. In the end, IND-COL will be tested for association with social ecology, religion and economic growth. Result of this article will contribute to a more comprehensive theory to explain the origin and evolution of IND-COL (ultimate explanation), and in turn serve as foundation for further theoretical development in social and cultural psychology (proximate explanation).
