Abstract

Several delicate issues are related to the Latin expressions of quantity. Their definition, to start with, is already problematic (should one adopt a definition that supposes a prior knowledge of their semantics, or an « internal » definition ?). Also, irregularities appear in the expression of quantity for massive nouns. Finally, the evolution of the language modifies the quantifying nature of some important terms (quot, quantus and their correlatives). This thesis has three main objectives: proposing an « internal » definition of quantifier, studying irregularities in the expression of mid-scalar quantification by multus and magnus, and the semantic evolution of quantus, quot and their correlatives, from classical to late Latin.

Abstract

Les expressions de la quantité en latin posent plusieurs problèmes délicats. D'abord, leur définition même est problématique (faut-il adopter une définition qui présupposer une connaissance de leur sémantique, ou une définition « interne » à la langue ?). Ensuite, des irrégularités apparaissent dans l'expression de la quantité des noms massifs. Finalement, l'évolution de la langue modifie la portée quantifiante de certains termes importants (quot, quantus et leurs corrélatifs). Cette thèse se propose donc trois objectifs principaux : proposer une définition « interne » de la notion de quantifieur, étudier les irrégularités dans l'expression de la quantification mid-scalaire massive par multus et magnus, et l'évolution sémantique des expressions quantus, quot et de leurs corrélatifs du latin classique au latin tardif.
