Abstract

To become a domestic in fortaleza : wandering and matrimonial ambitions pursuit this research is concerned with redefinition of social positions based on observations carried out on household employees, i. E. Maids, who live in the city of fortaleza (brazil). Employment as a maid in fortaleza brings with it a number of major biographical changes, both in terms of family environment as well as in terms of a socio-geographical shift. The position of a maid is only seldom passed on from generation to generation. It is an option for girls from small country villages with no work experience. They come from the interior of the state of ceara, which they usually then leave for good. This study of the situation of maids seeks to investigate why these girls are prepared to go through an experience which will bring with it so many upheavals. Based on research carried out by historians on the situation of french household employees last century, to work as a maid in fortaleza is seen in this study to be a way of establishing oneself in town. The results of a variety of surveys we carried out lead us to assume that marriage is the main objective of the girls' migration. That would be the result of the low social value of the men available for marriage locally, in the villages. This 'rural devaluation' is in part due to the increasing poverty of young people from small villages and partly due to the increase of matrimonial ambitions on the part of the girls, which contributes to the redefinition of criteria for selecting a spouse. In this way the migration of those girls to fortaleza is perceived as a strategy to ascend within the social ranks through marriage. It is only by looking at this 'promotional dimension' of these girls' behaviour that we can understand the interrelationship between migration and household employment. To work as a maid is therefore not only a way of establishing oneself in town , but also a means of achieving social ambitions through marriage.

Abstract

Choix migratoire, choix matrimonial : devenir domestique à Fortaleza cette recherche s'intéresse à la question de la redéfinition des positions sociales, à partir d'observations réalisées sur les domestiques a demeure de la ville de Fortaleza (Brésil). L'engagement dans la domesticité fortalezense est une expérience qui réunit plusieurs changements biographiques majeurs : de milieu familial, social et géographique. Or la position de domestique ne se transmet que rarement entre les générations, mais est ouverte à des jeunes filles de la petite paysannerie sans passé professionnel, venues des campagnes cearenses qu'elles quittent définitivement. Dès lors l'objectif de ce travail est de s'interroger sur les facteurs qui peuvent prédisposer des jeunes filles à faire une telle expérience, porteuse d'autant de bouleversements. A la suite des analyses que les historiens ont consacrées à la domesticité française du siècle dernier, l'accès à un emploi domestique à Fortaleza est appréhendé dans cette recherche comme un moyen d'installation en ville. Les résultats des différentes enquêtes invitent à mettre au principe de la migration des jeunes filles un objectif d'ordre matrimonial, résultat de la baisse de la valeur sociale des hommes auxquelles elles peuvent prétendre sur le marché matrimonial local. Cette dévalorisation des ruraux provient d'une part de l'appauvrissement des jeunes gens de la petite paysannerie ; d'autre part du développement des ambitions matrimoniales des jeunes filles qui contribue à redéfinir les critères d'évaluation et de sélection d'un conjoint. Ainsi, la migration de ces dernières vers Fortaleza s'inscrit dans une stratégie d'ascension sociale par le mariage. C'est à la condition de prendre en compte la dimension promotionnelle des conduites des jeunes filles que l'on peut comprendre l'étroite corrélation entre migration et domesticité. L'engagement dans la domesticité n'est donc pas seulement un moyen d'installation en ville, il est aussi un moyen de réaliser des ambitions matrimoniales.
