Abstract

The understanding of village life from ancient times to the Middle Ages (until the 13) constitutes a recent topic of research (from 1960-1970) for historians and archaeologists. Their methods and sources of information (written sources and results of digs) because of the limitations imposed, have unhappily not allowed their research to reach finition. The discovery of these limits is a departure point for our work, of which are the objectives is to by-pass the snags of analysis by establishing a different method of approach: the analyses of the faces of the villages. This method new in this sphere, is applied to a body of small towns, rarely, if ever studied in France. The usefulness of this method of approach is validated by the final hypotheses (up-dating of the anteceding structures, sett off by the high-middle-age as an important period in the structure of the territory. Hypotheses which oper up new work tracks.

Abstract

La compréhension de l'habitat groupé à l'Antiquité et au Moyen Âge (jusqu'au XIIIe siècle) constitue un sujet de recherche récent (depuis 1960-70) pour les historiens et les archéologues. Leurs méthodes et sources respectives d'analyse (sources écrites et résultats de fouilles), en raison des limites qu'elles imposent, ne leur ont pas permis malheureusement d'aboutir dans leurs recherches. Le constat de ces limites est un point de départ pour notre travail, dont l'un des buts est de contourner les écueils d'analyse en établissant une autre méthode d'approche : les analyses morphologiques des plans d'agglomérations. Cette méthode, nouvelle pour le sujet, est appliquée à un corpus d'agglomérations secondaires, rarement, voire peu étudiées en France. L’utilité de la méthode d'approche est validée par les hypothèses finales (mise au jour de structures sous-jacentes à l'habitat, mise en valeur du Haut Moyen Âge comme période importante de la structuration du territoire), hypothèses qui ouvrent sur de nouvelles pistes de travail.
