    Roman glass in Haute-Normandie

  • Abstract

This study is based on roman glassware found in upper normandy, i. E. 744 irems, kept in 12 museums, 6 private collections and several archaeological depots. One third of them comes from excavations after 1965. 79 per cent of the items were found in funeral contexts, 10,5 per cent come from settlements, the others belonging to old finds which are poorly documented. The geographic frame is three civitates, the caletes, the veliocasses and the aulerques eburovices, and the study covers the period from the beginning of the first c. Ad to the end of the fourth c. Ad the first volume contains the general topics : the methods of elaboration of the catalogue, the finds spots of the items (with maps), the establishment of a morphological typology and chronology (with plates representing the types and chronological tables), the problems of glass composition and manufacturing techniques, the catalogue of stamps (181 items, among which 87 barrel-jugs), imported glass and supposed local production (big square and cylindrical jugs, barrel-jugs. . . ). The second volume analyses the types : each type is treated in an individual chapter (with regional informations and the most evident comparaisons). The third volume provides the drawings and the photographies of the items and the fourth volume contains the catalogue.
