Human movement vigor : from action to cognition

This thesis focuses on the human movement vigor, i.e., the speed spontaneously chosen by an individual to perform a voluntary action. The literature shows that vigor depends on an individual's implicit motiva-tion in the task and on a neural circuit involving the basal ganglia, as suggested by the bradykinesia of parkinsonian patients. Our initial work focused on the consistency of inter-individual differences of vigor and confirmed the trait-like aspect of vigor despite changes in tasks or effectors, with the ocu-lomotor system appearing to be apart (Study 1). Then, we wondered about the link between the vigor of each person and the perception of the vigor of others: if vigor is a key element of all our actions, it could also be a determining factor for interacting effectively with others, whether physically or socially. The mirror neuron system could play a role in the vigor of movement, both in action and in perception. In a second study, we have indeed shown the existence of a perceptual vigor law analogous to the motor law during a speed judgment task of biological movements. This judgment seems to be based on a general representation of the vigor of other people's movements rather than on the observer's own vigor (Study 2). This work opens theoretical perspectives but also perspectives of industrial applications (e.g., implementation of the general vigor law to a robot to optimize its interaction with the user) and clinical applications (e.g., rehabilitation of Parkinsonian patients).
