From trapped bulk-acoustic-wave cavities to optomechanics

Des cavités à ondes acoustiques jusqu'à l'optomécanique

Résumé

This PhD work continues and reinforces recentinvestigations on bulk acoustic wave resonators atcryogenic temperature (typically 4 Kelvins). In suchoperating conditions their unique properties open upnew applications in different fields, from ultra-stableoscillators to hybrid quantum systems. For all theseareas of research, new low-loss devices can play agame changing role. This work, which is orientedtowards optomechanics, explores the possibilities oflight-based actuation of an acoustical cavity with thehorizon of building a cryogenic oscillator with such acavity. Without loss of generality, the selected cavityis a quartz crystal resonator, adapted to the usagerequirements with cryogenic environment. The firstpart of this thesis focuses on the theoretical andexperimental study of optical Fabry-Perot cavitieswith absorptive mirrors, most notably with a novelmethod to extract the index of refraction of thinmetallic films based on their particular propertieswhen used in an optical cavity, i.e. a broadenedFull Width at Half Maximum with respect to thenon-absorptive case, as well as a frequency shiftbetween the transmitted and the reflected peaks. In the second part, an analysis is performed ondifferent means of mechanical actuation by light,i.e.by the photothermal force, the radiationpressure force and the electrostrictive force. Anexperimental study of the former demonstrates inparticular the feasability of photothermal actuationat frequencies exceeding some Megahertz. Theconclusion opens gives way to some perspectives, and specifically about other geometries which maypotentially optimize the optomechanical coupling.
