This thesis is devoted to the identification of the effects of translanguaging and transculturing in the Sri Lankan context by a multimodal and longitudinal approach. Translanguaging means the process of language production of individuals which was first used by Williams (1996) to refer to students in bilingual Welsh schools where input is provided by one language and the task is performed by another. We use the term "translanguaging" in this study to refer to interlocutors who can switch from one language or dialect to another using their understanding in one and their expression in another. Transculturing means the transcultural behaviour of individuals and expresses the dynamism given by the ing form in English rather than the term "transculturality" proposed by Dervin. The term transculturing was proposed by Baena (2006) to explain complex life experiences where undefined choices appear. The construct transculturing was developed and presented by Jean-Paul Narcy-Combes to discuss a process which makes us interpret events and react to them. This process is at the level of thought but which is less conscious than this thought. The basis of this study is that the transcultural behaviours of Sri Lankans explain the translanguaging productions. While focusing on language production and cross-cultural behaviour, this multidisciplinary theoretical framework is based on emergentism and the theory of complex dynamic systems. The field research involves two focus group discussions and self-confrontation interviews with students from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura and University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka and binational couples who live in Sri Lanka. Their speeches and behaviours were analysed in order to identify the presence of translanguaging and transculturing as well as their degree of awareness of these two constructs. From the focus group discussions and self-confrontation interviews, an attitude questionnaire was prepared to identify the propositions and facts that can be generalised in the Sri Lankan context.Transculturing is mainly caused by the knowledge of English and additional languages as well as by the cultural experience of individuals. It usually triggers translanguaging of which individuals are unaware. The quantitative research has generalised the fact that the discourse of individuals reveals the dynamic complexity of their experiences. The dominant culture is only a part of their cultural experience. English language plays an essential role in the experience of individuals. In addition, one of the effects of transculturing may be the awarness and reinforcement of original behaviours that appear useful or satisfying.
