New ultra-high temperature ceramics synthesized by flash sintering : study of oxidation and measurement of thermo-radiative properties under extreme conditions

This thesis work deals with the sintering and the study of the oxidation of new diboride-based (ZrB2 and HfB2) ultra-high temperature ceramics in association with different additional compounds (SiC, TaSi2 and AlN) to improve their oxidation resistance at very high temperature. Fully dense materials with 20 or 30 vol.% additive were first elaborated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) under optimized conditions and microstructural characterizations have been performed. Oxidation studies on these new compositions were carried out under conditions close to hypersonic atmospheric re-entry (air plasma at 1000 Pa) over a wide temperature range, from 1800 to 2600 K, using the original MESOX facility placed at the focus of the 6 kW Odeillo solar furnace. Different characterizations were performed after oxidation (Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy) to better understand the oxidation behavior for each composition. Oxidation mechanisms have been proposed for each of them based in particular on phase diagrams and material characterization. New elements concerning the oxidation mechanisms on well known materials such as (Hf/Zr)B2-SiC have been highlighted. One composition seems to be more promising than the others for space applications, with no mass loss measured up to 2600 K. Normal spectral emissivity measurements –on samples of the three studied compositions and pre-oxidized in air plasma – between 1300 and 2000 K, under 1000 Pa air, were performed in the large 1 MW Odeillo solar furnace using the MEDIASE reactor. High values of the total normal emissivity of around 0.90 were obtained due to the presence of the oxide layer formed in air plasma conditions and this high emissivity is interesting for aerospace applications.
