The historiical novel in Arabian Gulf, between fiction and reference

This study intends to explore the historical novel from the Gulf with the aim of circumscribing the area, difficult to grasp, within which fiction merges with historical references. It is meant to bring to light the nature of the novelistic techniques used in the melting of historical material within the framework of fiction. To do so, the first part of this presentation provides an overview of the changes that historical novel has undergone in the Arab world, in general. The second part provides a classification of the themes addressed in the historical novel from the Gulf. A distinction shall be made between historical novels that are considered as part of “the great History” and those focusing on the “little History”. The themes developed in these novels will be examined and emblematic maritime warfare novels minutely considered. Therefore, three novels from our corpus shall be explored extensively, in a comparative way, since they all deal with the same historical event: the Portuguese invasion of the Gulf, at the beginning of the 16th century. These novels reveal an extreme interweaving of the historical references within fictitious structures that are based on different places and include various types of characters. It follows that the handling of this historical event differs just as much as the narrative structure within the three novels. Distinctive features of historical Gulf novels shall be brought among which: a close relation to historical references, the recurrence of the journey theme and the interest given to female characters.
