Imaginaries of dystopia and the posthuman in contemporary science-fictional TV series (2009-2019)

Nowadays, there are more and more science-fictional TV shows depicting a dystopian future for the human race. Today’s fears are used to create tomorrow’s nightmares. The century in which we are living is overturned by scientific and technological innovations, and political and economic systems that keep on disappointing. Their weaknesses are showing and they are the roots of an imaginary of the end. To understand this imaginary, we will have to contextualize the contemporary period and the third industrial revolution (biotechnologies and hypermedia societies). Science-fictional and dystopian TV shows are to be linked with the concept of “cognitive estrangement” (Suvin). This concept mirrors the contemporary questioning regarding humankind’s relationship to the collective and the individual, the confrontation between humanity and alterity (from the alien to augmented and modified human beings), and the transformations of the definition of identity linked to human’s relationship with screens (Gervais), interfaces (Galloway) and virtual reality. By comparing several TV shows, we will identity their similarities in the hope of highlighting the characteristics of dystopian imaginaries including (or not) posthuman figures. We will focus on the reflexive dimension of the TV shows studied in this work.
