In Thailand, there are large areas of pineapple cultivation and pineapple leaf is a byproduct from which pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) may be extracted. PALF has high cellulose content and also high mechanical properties. In recent years, natural fiber has been received a lot of attention as reinforcing material in polymer composites due to several advantages. It can be used as alternative replacement for synthetic fiber. Aramid fiber is one of important synthetic fiber that is widely used in many applications and it might be a standard fiber for industry in the future. Thus it will be used as a benchmark in the project. In this research, three concepts were used to improve the reinforcing efficiency of PALF. These include 1. pre-treatment to breakdown the fiber bundle to elementary microfiber to increase the aspect ratio, 2. treatments to modify the fiber surface by simple cleaning, grafting with silane and low molecular weight rubber to increase the adhesiveness or tack of the rubber to the fiber and 3. incorporation of adhesion promoter having low molecular weight and high polarity as ingredient during compounding. Unidirectional composites were then prepared and the reinforcing efficiency evaluated at low strain using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile test. Overall stress-strain behavior was also studied. With appropriate surface treatment and adhesion promoter, PALF displays clear potential as high performance reinforcing fiber.
