Résumé
The poetry of Jules Supervielle (1884-1960)is pervaded by the theme of guilt. The tragedy of being an orphan and his bicultural heritage had an impact on his life story which is loaded with secrets and remorse that could not be atoned for. Far from deveoping theories on guilt, our approach has consisted in showing how this guilt has twisted objective realities in order to infuse his writing. By showing the specific characteristics of his style as well as the symbolic and mythical dimension of Supervielle's works, this study brings aout the main theme of the poet's personal mythology. The admission of guilt affects all areas of life the relations with the history , the work of writing, the emotional life- and is etched onto the dialectic which conveys its own exoneration of guilt. So this argumentation opposes the multifaced action of the feeling of guilt and the forces of absolution liberated by man in order to survive the obssessive fear of evil. Several questions arise from this antagonism. How do these two themes interact in the different realms of everyday life ? How can they be justified and ontologically ? How did Supervieille manage to transcend both good and evil ? From the quest of lost perfection to the construction of personal ethics, from the obligation for gratitude to the necessity of punishment, moral conscience constantly works to rehabilitate fallen man.
