Résumé

This thesis studies the history of the women through a sport, the swimming, in France. The narrative is thematically ordered wants at the same time political, social and cultural, of origins, marked by the first participation of a woman in a swimming event in 1905, in year 1939, synonym for political upheavals. The historical analysis, based on numerous periodicals, books and some funds of archives, shows an ambivalence. Alternately, the practice of swimming show signs emancipators towards the women ( for example, the swimmers are the first to participate officially in Olympic Games, they quickly integrate the French sport institutions, women's sport associations see being born a sociability emancipator ). But swimming can be conservative ( for example, marginalization within the institutions, respect for gender norms, sidelining of women in technical innovations ).
