Synthesis of donor-acceptor systems associating the tetrathiafulvalene to the p-benzoquinone or the 1,10-phénanthroline

Much attention is devoted to the development of donor-acceptor assemblies in order to control the electronic interaction between both partners for the elaboration of new functional organic materials. This work is devoted to the synthesis of molecular assemblies incorporating the electron donor tetrathiafulvalene associated to the electron acceptor pbenzoquinone or 1,10-phenanthroline. The introduction of a conjugated spacer between 1,3-dithiole moieties affords new highly extended systems bearing at each extremity the p-benzoquinone unit or its precursor with the objective to use the tetrathiafulvalene as a bridge in an intramolecular electron transfer between both external redox centers. To extend this work in the 1,10-phenanthroline series, the versatility of the 2-cyanoethylsulfanyl group is exploited with the possibility of selective deprotection leading to symmetrical or dissymmetrical 5,6-difunctionalized 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives, in their neutral or ruthenium (II) complex form with chelating 2,2'-bipyridine units. Fused systems associating tetrathiafulvalene and dipyridoquinoxaline are developed as electroactive sensors with the evidence that the complexation of metals by the 1,10-phenanthroline unit can be detected using optical and redox properties of tetrathiafulvalene.
