Numerical simulation of fiber orientation in injection of reinforced thermoplastics

This work concerns the simulation of fiber orientation in injection of reinforced thermoplastics. Two main points has been treated in this work :*A fully three-dimensional method has been integrated in Rem3D to calculate fiber orientation.*The introduction of the coupling between flow and fiber orientation has been considered. The fiber orientation is described by a second order tensor and its evolution is given by the Folgar and Tucker equation. This equation has been solved by a space time discontinuous Galerkin method, used to reduce the computational time. This method allows a simultaneous resolution in space and time where the orientation tensor is interpolated by constant and discontinuous functions in space (Po) and polynomial discontinuous in time functions of degree n .Moreover the coupling between flow and fiber orientation is taken into account by adding a fiber contribution to the stress tensor. The rheological constitutive equation has been solved implicitly using a mixed P1+/P1 velocity-pressure formulation where the orientation tensor is considered known. A decoupled approach has been used in which the flow and fiber calculation has been successively solved. Finally the flow and fiber solver has been integrated on the Rem3D injection software. The last part of this work, based on a correlation between experimental results and numercial simulation, focused on the understanding of fiber orientation in injection process. Coupling effects on the orientation state are analysed for different configurations.
