Giono, "author of images", since his first books, has attached a great importance to the spectacular and therefore to the staging of the text ; but the desire of dramatizing the narrative will be truly important after the second world war with Chroniques romanesques. As a matter of fact, the theatricality highlights a great work of novelistic dramaturgy as well as a staging of artistic creation whose greatest part was revealed by the novelist himself in Noé. However let's make no mistake about it, the theatricality of "books of embers" does not merge with the one of youthful works, for Giono has triumhed over the lyrical enchantment, he denounces, just as he glorifies it, the illusion of the world and fiction. The writer, adopting "Sirius's point of view", gives us a "performance of writing", resuming two expressions of Giono, where irony and entertainment with its negative side, bitterness, prevail. Moreover, theatricality can be multi-faced since it originated both in irony and dissimilar literary sources which sticks Giono's theatricality to a vast cultural space and which makes it deal, among others, with authors such as Sophocles, Aeschylus, Euripides, Shakespeare. Besides, these two poles, greek and shakespearian, give life to Giono's creation where themes are concerned, as well as structures as constants of writing, appollinian and dionysian. On the other hand, the baroque theme of the big theatre of the world feeds in tis chronicles a rich theatricality concerning the actor-characters who wear masks and costumes in the centre of a metamorphosed universe becoming a gigantic theatrical set, erratic and shining.
