Among the mayor historical events that took place at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth, we shall focus our attention on the disaster of cuba and on literature especially the ninety-eight generation. How did the society of madrid resent that period, which was a kind of hinge, eve of a new century? it seemed interesting to try to answer that question, using the theater as a means, because its widespread popularity and its copiousness are attested by the press of the time. The dramatist we shall devot our study upon, are echegaray, dicenta, perez galdos, benavente and the brothers quintero. ''all the world's a stage'', shakespeare and calderon say. On the contrary, hte theater is a microcosme. First of all, we analysed the process of its creation, the characters being broady defined (with their number, age and social rank), then the character as a individual (his genesis), place in his background (setting-madrid). Later on, we considered the laws tthat rule the world, that is to say god, money and policis. All that entails a certain type or relations (calumny and mutual aid). A special reference has been made to women's condition. The themes recurrent in this sort of drama, wich is also seen from within, refer to the social aspects of the time and, by this way, explain the interferences between the workd as it is in reality and the world of the stage. The inentions of the playwrights, wether they differ or agree with each other, enable the reader to assess with the evolution in mentalities, which open new prospects to drama as a genre.
