Poetry and reality, imagination and repetition in the "supreme fiction" of wallace stevens

  • Abstract

The words + supreme fiction ; indicate a key notion which the author has consciously elaborated through a long process of rationalization and which covers the extensive project of replacing the old credo of christian mythology by a poetic idea of god. It instigates in itself the most important claim of his exercise, but olso the most concealed and ambiguous : that of the role played by poetry in a time of war and, hence, of the position of the poet and his engagement in a world where the religious explanation is not sufficient any more to tame the violence and omnipresence of death. This programmatic notion involve two others : the reduction to the + first idea ; and the act of faith of creation. Together they summarize the essential aspects of his approach and of his quest. Their given shapes are declined through a series of variations which, allied to the persistence of his themes and to the generalized rime of repetition, build his entire poetical work and sustain most of his essays.
