The pitfalls of translation : between adaptation and fidelity . The example of the american musicals
LES PARASITES DE TRADUCTION : ENTRE ADAPTATION ET FIDÉLITÉ. L'EXEMPLE DES COMÉDIES MUSICALES AMÉRICAINES.
Résumé
Over the past several yaers, the french had a resurgencce in the popularity of american musical theater. The musicals are generally adapted into french. In ythis dissertation we will first observe, and then try to understand the behaviors of the frenche adaptors of the american musicals, when they come against pitfalls that perturb the direct comprehension of a text. We will look at three problems of translation in detail : the onomastics, the titles and the level of language. Several examples from the dialogue and the songs will illustrate the fact that the behaviors of the adaptors would depend on the support. The choices made by the adaptors would be adopted to make the text comprehensible because a musical is made to be played on stage and not to be read. We will also reveal that the behaviors of the adaptors would be different in the lyrics. Indeed thy would have to respect faithfully the musical base wich often tells them its choice. So the will come up against a lot of constraints, such as the syllabes, the rhymes, the rythmy and the prosody. But the task of the adaptors is to write a texte which is both faithful to the form and the shape. The dissertation is based on the hypothesis that the adaptors write a text that is intended to be played and listened. These two things would lead the adaptors to modidy or even transform the original texte for their audience.
Depuis quelques années, les français se passionnent de nouveau pour les comédies musicales américaines. Elles sont généralement adaptées dans la langue du pays d'accueil, le français en l'occurrence. Ce travail de recherche se propose d'observer ,dans un premier temps, et de tenter de comprendre, dans un deuxième temps, les comportements des adaptateurs de comédies musicales anglo-américaines face aux éléments qui parasitent la compréhension directe d'un texte. Trois problèmes de traduction seront examinés plus particulièrement : l'onomastique, les titres et le registre. Plusieurs exemples issus des dialogues et des chansons illustreront le fait que les choix des adaptateurs varieront en fonction du support. Ces choix seront souvent adoptés pour rendre le texte compréhensible, car rappelons-le, une comédie musicale est conçue pour être jouées sur scène et non pour être lue. Il sera également démontré que les comportements des adaptateurs seront différents dans les chansons. Ces derniers devront effectivement,respecter le plus fidèlement possible la base musicale qui leur dictera parfois ses choix. Ils se heurteront alors à de nombreuses contraintes, telles que les contraintes syllabiques, rimiques et rythmiques et de prosodie pendant la restitution des lyrics. Mais, la mission de tout adaptateur de comédies musicales consiste à produire un texte qui soit à la fois fidèle au fond comme à la forme. Ainsi ce projet de recherche se fonde sur l'hypothèse que les adaptateurs produisent un texte qui soit destiné à la scène et à l'écoute. Ces deux facteurs les amèneront à devoir modifier voire transformer le texte-source pour son public.
