"why and how are autobiographies written?, this is the question addressed in this study. I have examined the works of numerous aythors, mainly those of roland barthes. I analysed first the difference between the autobiography and the autoportrait, next and the notions of the "i" and of the "time" which are the deciding factors in the motive and the form of this type of writing. In the end, by synthesizing these issues, we deduce the general scheme which tells us the "why and how" of the autobiography.

Cette etude porte sur la question : "pourquoi et comment ecrit-on une autobiographie?. En examinant les oeuvres de divers ecrivains, surtout celles de roland barthes, on analyse d'abord la difference entre l'autobiographie et l'autoportrait, ensuite la notion du "je" et celle du "temps" qui sont les elements determinants du mobile et de la forme de l'ecriture. A la fin, en synthetisant toutes ces problematiques, on en induit le scheme general qui repond a "pourquoi et comment" de l'autobiographie.
